How can I get my refund by direct deposit?
After filing, if you have a refund coming to you, the fastest way to get your money is to sign up for direct deposit. Direct deposit is reliable, convenient, secure, and most importantly, ensures that you receive all your payments without delay.
Generally speaking, if you filed your return online, you could have your refund within 2 weeks. If you are signed up for direct deposit, you could get your refund faster.
Note: This timeline only applies to returns received on or before their due dates. It might also take longer to receive your refund if your return is selected for a detailed review.
You can sign up for direct deposit in the following ways:
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
- Online
- Log in to your My Account (registration required), under Related services, click Arrange my direct deposit
- Through the mobile app MyCRA
- Desjardins members (online)
- TD Canada Trust customers (over the phone or in person at your branch)
- social insurance number
- full name and current address, including postal code
- most recent income tax and benefit return and information about the most recent payments you received from the CRA
- banking information: three-digit financial institution number, five-digit transit number, and your account number
- Right in H&R Block’s 2023 tax software. You’ll need your financial institution’s information and the routing information for your bank account.
- Online: Register for Direct Deposit with your Revenu Québec My Account (registration required)
- By mailing a completed LM.3.M-V (for Montréal residents) or LM.3.Q-V (for Québec residents) to the address on the form
If your banking information has changed since the last time you filed your taxes and you need to update your information with the CRA or Revenu Québec, keep in mind that it might take several days for your banking information to be updated.
Note: The CRA cautions you not to close your old bank account until your payment has been deposited as it could already be in process.
You can change your banking information in the following ways:
- Online
- Log in to your My Account (registration required), under Related services, click Arrange my direct deposit. Follow the prompts to update your banking information.

- By mailing a completed LM.3.M-V (for Montréal residents) or LM.3.Q-V (for Québec City residents) to the address on the form.
Of course, you can also receive your tax refund by cheque. The CRA’s goal is to send your refund within 2 weeks when you file online and within 8 weeks if you filed your return by mail if your return was received on or before the due date. It could also take longer to receive your refund if your return is selected for a detailed review.
