FUEL FILTER #fuelfilter
This is used on all 6-8 HP B&S engines where a fuel line feeds the carburetor. It replaces B&S 298090 and other numbers. Original filters may be of a bullet shape, this is a drop-in replacement. If you have an old bowl type filter with a damaged screen you can use one of these in the line for extra protection. You can select the filter or the filter with a pair of new clamps.

FUEL VALVE KIT #fuelvalvekit This kit includes the valve and clamps to add an inline fuel shut-off to engines with 1/4 inch fuel line. This includes 6, 7 and 8 HP Briggs & Stratton engines. It can be installed with the fuel line kit found above. A fuel line shut-off can be desirable if you are concerned about carburetor fuel weeping. On units with electric start the factory valve is often inaccessible and certainly is not mitten friendly. This valve can be added for convenience.

Did you enter a length?

Many Gilson tillers use this basic plunger type throttle cable. If you provide the length of the sheathe, shown as " LENGTH in the above image I'll do the rest. The extension will be size to Briggs and Stratton standards and the Z bend will be formed. The maximum "LENGTH" is 60 inches.

If you do not have the old cable to measure and are sizing it from scratch, remember that it is better off a little long rather than short.

It's worth mentiontioning that with age and the effects of ethahol fuel your machine's fuel line tends to break down and can release fragments. These fragments can prevent proper operation of the float valve or plug other passages. Consider a new fuel line and filter when rebuilding your carburetor.

B&S Engine Air Filter for Select 7-8 HP models (390930, 393957, 270782, 271794) #roundfilter (Not Used on Snowblowers)
These filters are used on select 7 & 8 HP Gilson built tillers as well as other applications. Consult your parts list and compare your filter to the provided reference dimensions before ordering. The cartridge is 3-3/4" tall X 2" inside dameter X 4-1/4' outside diameter.

This fitler pair is not interchangable with air filters of other designs.

Add one ounce of clean engine oil to the foam prefilter. Squeeze it to evenly distribute the oil. The oil aids in the dust trapping function. Wash the element and re-oil every 25 hours. Replace as needed.

The paper element can be tapped on a surface to loosen dust, or rinsed in water & detergent to clean. Dry thorougly before reinstalling. When it will no longer come clean or is damaged replace it.

Annual service will usually suffice, but tilling can be dusty. Inspect periodically and adjust your interval as needed.

B&S STEEL FUEL TANK 6-8 HP ENGINES #290816 #fuel_tank

This steel fuel tank is commonly found on 6,7 and 8 HP Briggs and Stratton engines up until the 1980s when some engines were equipped with plastic tanks.

Ths is the cap that fits the 1 gallon steel tank sold here. It does not fit the smaller tanks with the carburetor mounted on top. it is the cap shown in the picture.

The Sno-Guard fuel tank cap with the slush shield has been discontinued.

The recoil clutch connects the recoil starter pulley to the crank shaft and serves to secure the flywheel. It behaves much like a ratchet, allowing you to spin the engine but then letting the engine run on. The common failure mode is a recoil rope that pulls with no resistance and does not spin the crank shaft. The recoil may also grab late when the rope is partially pulled. Initially this may occur when the engine is cold or has been at rest for a prolonged period. The internal components must be clean, dry, and not worn. If it does not respond to an internal cleaning (no lube!) it should be replaced.

To secure the flywheel and not allow the flywheel key to needlessly shear it must be tightened to the correct torque with an appropriate tool. Details are to the right.

MAGNETRON SOLID STATE IGNITION #MAGNETRON
Some Fundamental Information

If your engine was built before 1981 it probably has a conventional breaker point ignition system. This means you have a spark plug, spark plug wire, magneto (coil) and points & condenser under the flywheel. Servicing the ignition points requires removing and replacing the flywheel. While there are some dubious hacks, removal and reinstallation of the clutch and flywheel requires a handful of special tools that very few owners will have or want to invest in. That's okay since there is now a much simpler way to restore a failed ignition system.

Briggs and Stratton engines built after a point in 1981 have the Magnetron ignition system. This coil module picks up on the passing flywheel magnet to time and trigger the spark. This eliminates the need for the breaker points and condenser. On the aluminum block engine of your Gilson snowblower the flywheel magnet is the same for either ignition system. Briggs & Stratton in their infinite wisdom kept the same mounting points. This makes it easy to update your breaker point ignition to the solid-state Magnetron.

When installing a Magnetron coil module on a formerly breaker point ignition engine you can simply abandon the breaker points housed behind the fly wheel. This eliminates the need for specialized tools to remove and reinstall the recoil clutch, and flywheel. This puts ignition repair squarely in the hands if the DIY machine owner.

Considering the advantages, it hardly makes sense to service breaker points. It makes no sense at all to replace a conventional magneto coil. The possible exception being that you have a dedication to keeping the engine in its original state.

Please see this service bulletin for other important details. These coils will not replace 3 pole magnetos such as the one pictured to the right. Such magnetos are found on engines typically built prior to 1963. These engines will have code number begining with 62 or less. This is applicable to the earliest Gilson tillers.

This kit allows you to upgrade your pre 1981 engine that does not have the Magentron (solid state) ignition. The change to maintenance free solid state is nice.
