It's worth mentiontioning that with age and the effects of ethahol fuel your machine's fuel line tends to break down and can release fragments. These fragments can prevent proper operation of the float valve or plug other passages. Consider a new fuel line and filter when rebuilding your carburetor.

This fitler pair is not interchangable with air filters of other designs.
Add one ounce of clean engine oil to the foam prefilter. Squeeze it to evenly distribute the oil. The oil aids in the dust trapping function. Wash the element and re-oil every 25 hours. Replace as needed.
The paper element can be tapped on a surface to loosen dust, or rinsed in water & detergent to clean. Dry thorougly before reinstalling. When it will no longer come clean or is damaged replace it.
Annual service will usually suffice, but tilling can be dusty. Inspect periodically and adjust your interval as needed.

B&S RECOIL CLUTCH # 399671, 298310, 394558 #recoil_clutch | The recoil clutch connects the recoil starter pulley to the crank shaft and serves to secure the flywheel. It behaves much like a ratchet, allowing you to spin the engine but then letting the engine run on. The common failure mode is a recoil rope that pulls with no resistance and does not spin the crank shaft. The recoil may also grab late when the rope is partially pulled. Initially this may occur when the engine is cold or has been at rest for a prolonged period. The internal components must be clean, dry, and not worn. If it does not respond to an internal cleaning (no lube!) it should be replaced. |
To secure the flywheel and not allow the flywheel key to needlessly shear it must be tightened to the correct torque with an appropriate tool. Details are to the right.

Some Fundamental Information |
If your engine was built before 1981 it probably has a conventional breaker point ignition system. This means you have a spark plug, spark plug wire, magneto (coil) and points & condenser under the flywheel. Servicing the ignition points requires removing and replacing the flywheel. While there are some dubious hacks, removal and reinstallation of the clutch and flywheel requires a handful of special tools that very few owners will have or want to invest in. That's okay since there is now a much simpler way to restore a failed ignition system.
Briggs and Stratton engines built after a point in 1981 have the Magnetron ignition system. This coil module picks up on the passing flywheel magnet to time and trigger the spark. This eliminates the need for the breaker points and condenser. On the aluminum block engine of your Gilson snowblower the flywheel magnet is the same for either ignition system. Briggs & Stratton in their infinite wisdom kept the same mounting points. This makes it easy to update your breaker point ignition to the solid-state Magnetron.
When installing a Magnetron coil module on a formerly breaker point ignition engine you can simply abandon the breaker points housed behind the fly wheel. This eliminates the need for specialized tools to remove and reinstall the recoil clutch, and flywheel. This puts ignition repair squarely in the hands if the DIY machine owner.
Considering the advantages, it hardly makes sense to service breaker points. It makes no sense at all to replace a conventional magneto coil. The possible exception being that you have a dedication to keeping the engine in its original state.

This kit allows you to upgrade your pre 1981 engine that does not have the Magentron (solid state) ignition. The change to maintenance free solid state is nice. The beauty for the do-it-yourself mechanic is that you do not need to remove the flywheel to install this system. This kit uses the existing breaker point magneto coil so make sure it is not damaged. One terminal grounds to the mounting screw while the other splices to the coil primary and kill switch leads. Directions including a sketch are included. Without the need for expensive clutch and flywheel tools an ignition repair is now easy for any capable shade tree mechanic.
